PIBOT: AI humanoid robot pilot

Researchers have developed PIBOT, the world's first humanoid robot aircraft pilot.

Researchers have developed PIBOT, the world's first humanoid robot aircraft pilot utilizing AI. In addition to physically operating the cockpit, PIBOT leverages AI for flight planning, emergency protocol memory, and situational awareness.

While past autonomous pilots like DARPA's ALIAS performed basic flight maneuvers, PIBOT uniquely combines humanoid form with AI cognition. This allows existing aircraft operation without modifications, enabling practical near-term applications.

PIBOT uses ChatGPT to memorize global flight maps and emergency procedure manuals exceeding human capacity. According to developers, this extensive knowledge enables flawless flight and rapid emergency response.

With integrated cockpit cameras, the robot precisely controls switches even in severe turbulence while monitoring internal and external conditions. Tests have been in a simulator so far, but real test flights are imminent.

Beyond aviation, PIBOT's autonomous capabilities could be applied to cars, military vehicles and other equipment lacking human operators. The military acute personnel shortages make PIBOT's introduction particularly impactful.

Lead researcher Professor David Henchul Shim sees PIBOT improving safety and accessibility of flight alongside piloted aircraft. By blending humanoid robotics and AI, they have pioneered a new generation of intelligent machine assistants.

The PIBOT project began in 2022 with completion expected by 2026. The team envisions commercializing the AI pilot technology for both civilian and defense sectors.

PIBOT represents a revolutionary step toward autonomous aviation by melding robotics and artificial intelligence. The researchers believe humanoid robot pilots could someday handle dangerous duties to keep human pilots safer while expanding flight capabilities.
