ABB, a global leader in robotics and automation, has broken ground on the expansion of its North American robotics headquarters and manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The $20 million project, set for completion in November 2023, will create 72 highly skilled new robot jobs in the area and is supported by a $450,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant.

The expansion of ABB's robotics factory will increase production capacity, benefiting customers in the Americas, particularly those in growth sectors such as electric vehicles, healthcare, packaging, and logistics. This strategic investment responds to the rising demand for automation, as 70% of U.S. businesses look to bring production closer to home, according to ABB Robotics' recent survey.

Sami Atiya, president of ABB Robotics and Discrete Automation, emphasized the significance of this investment in accelerating ABB's global leadership in developing and manufacturing advanced robotic solutions in the U.S. The expanded facility will enable ABB to better serve customers across the Americas, providing them with access to innovative automated solutions.

The expansion and increased use of automation in the factory will create new robot jobs, supporting ABB's Robotics Packaging & Logistics Headquarters in Atlanta and the Robotics Lifesciences and Healthcare Hub at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. ABB currently employs approximately 350 people at its Auburn Hills facility.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised ABB's investment, stating that it will build on the state's economic momentum and continue to lead the future of robotics and automation. Companies like ABB Robotics and support from local partners are crucial in bringing jobs and investments to every region of the state, revitalizing communities, and building an economy for the future.

ABB's investment will see the implementation of the latest digital and automation technologies to manufacture next-generation robots in the U.S., streamlining the delivery process and reducing lead times. Nearly 90% of robots delivered to customers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and South America will soon be made in Auburn Hills. The plant will feature flexible, modular production cells that are digitally connected and networked, served by intelligent autonomous mobile robots.

AI-powered robotic systems will take on tasks such as screw driving, assembling, and material handling, relieving people from these tasks and enabling more rewarding work. The expanded facility will boast the most advanced technology available, with AI-enabled robots and smart digital manufacturing systems supporting the production and manufacture of state-of-the-art customer solutions.

John Bubnikovich, ABB United States robotics division president, highlighted that almost every aspect of the site will be upgraded to attract, retain, and nurture the best automation talent, while creating a U.S. manufacturing hub and headquarters befitting a global leader in automation.
