Fourier unveils GR-2: a next-generation humanoid robot with enhanced capabilities
In a significant advancement for humanoid robotics, Shanghai-based Fourier has introduced the GR-2, the latest iteration of its GRx series. This new robot represents a comprehensive upgrade over its predecessor, featuring improvements in hardware, design, and software capabilities that push the boundaries of what humanoid robots can achieve.
Standing at 175 cm (68.9 inches) tall and weighing 63 kg (139 pounds), the GR-2 is both taller and more robust than its predecessor, the GR-1. The new model boasts an impressive 53 degrees of freedom, allowing for complex movements and interactions with its environment. One of its most notable features is a single-arm load capacity of 3 kg (6.6 pounds), making it suitable for various practical applications.
A key innovation in the GR-2's design is its detachable battery system, which doubles the capacity of previous versions and provides up to two hours of runtime. This swappable battery feature represents a significant practical advancement, allowing for minimal downtime as operators can quickly replace depleted batteries and return the robot to service.
Fourier has made substantial improvements to the robot's internal architecture, implementing an integrated cabling design that conceals wires and creates a more compact package. This streamlined approach not only enhances the robot's aesthetic appeal but also facilitates easier modularization and customization for specific applications.
Perhaps most impressive are the GR-2's new hands, which feature 12 degrees of freedom - double the dexterity of earlier models. These advanced appendages are equipped with six array-type tactile sensors that can detect force and identify object characteristics, bringing the robot's manipulation capabilities closer to human-like precision. This sophisticated sensory system enables new algorithms to optimize handling tasks across various scenarios.
The robot's movement capabilities are powered by Fourier's proprietary Smart Actuators (FSA 2.0), with seven different types specifically designed for various joint requirements. These actuators can generate peak torques exceeding 380 N.m, while a dual-encoder system ensures precise control and movement accuracy.
Alex Gu, CEO of Fourier, emphasized the significance of this release, stating, "GR-2 is a big step into the future of humanoid robotics. We're passionate about building the most intuitive embodied agent for AI, allowing it to engage with the physical world in ways like never before."
To support development and implementation, Fourier has optimized its software platform with a new SDK that supports multiple programming languages, including ROS. The company has also ensured compatibility with major frameworks such as NVIDIA Isaac Lab and Mujoco, providing developers with pre-optimized modules for machine vision, path planning, and force feedback control.
The GR-2's launch follows Fourier's recent corporate rebranding and builds upon the successful production release of the GR-1 in late 2023. With this latest advancement, Fourier continues to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving field of humanoid robotics, offering new possibilities for research, development, and practical applications across various industries.
