IBM Announces New Osprey Quantum Processor with Record 433 Qubits

IBM, the American chip manufacturing company, has announced a new Osprey quantum processor with a record 433 qubits at the IBM Quantum Summit 2022 conference. This is twice as much as the previous record holder, Xanadu Borealis, with 216 qubits, and three times more than the IBM Eagle. The Osprey architecture is a single-layer installation of qubits on top of several layers of control wiring, which allowed the company to increase the number of quantum elements while reducing the number and frequency of errors.

IBM claims that the capabilities of the Osprey quantum processor for processing numbers far exceed the capabilities of any traditional PC. To represent the state on the Osprey processor, an ordinary computer will need more bits than atoms in the observable Universe. The company has also added an integrated filtration system to the processor, which helps to reduce noise and increase the stability of the device.

IBM does not plan to stop at the Osprey processor and promises to release a Condor quantum processor with 1121 qubits by next year. By the end of 2023, the company plans to release IBM Quantum System Two, a modular system that accommodates several combined quantum processors.
