Hyundai Rotem's MUGV Ground Robots: Field-Tested and Ready

Hyundai Rotem's multi-purpose ground-based wheeled robots, known as MUGV, have completed rigorous testing in border regions, showcasing their versatility and readiness for combat duties.

Ordered by South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Authority (DAPA) in 2020, these fully electric vehicles feature a robust six-by-six wheel configuration, weighing two tons. With dimensions of 2.4 meters in length, 1.7 meters in width, and 0.9 meters in height, the MUGVs are engineered to excel in various missions, including reconnaissance, supply transportation, ammunition transport, and medical evacuation.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 kilometers per hour on highways and 10 kilometers per hour on challenging terrain, these ground robots boast a six-hour battery life at a cruising speed of 5 kilometers per hour. Each MUGV can accommodate a payload of up to 600 kilograms and is equipped with a remotely controlled weapon station for enhanced combat capabilities.

Following their delivery to the South Korean army for operational testing last summer, Hyundai Rotem recently announced the successful completion of a six-month evaluation period. The MUGV ground robots underwent extensive testing, including missions along the demilitarized zone, where they engaged in observation, reconnaissance, cargo delivery, and combat operations.

Beyond South Korea, interest in ground robots is growing globally. In the United States, military exercises have featured similar vehicles, armed with M240 machine guns and Javelin anti-tank missiles, simulating combat scenarios by obstructing paths to helipads and blocking roads. Hyundai Rotem's MUGV ground robots represent a significant advancement in military robotics, poised to redefine modern warfare strategies.
