John Deere looks to the stars to connect farmers of the future

Tractor giant John Deere has set its sights on the cosmos as the next frontier for empowering farmers with high-tech solutions to raise agricultural productivity.

The Moline, Illinois-based company announced a new strategic tie-up with Elon Musk's SpaceX to beam down satellite connectivity even to the world's most remote farmlands. By leveraging SpaceX's burgeoning Starlink constellation of low-orbit satellites, the partners aim to outfit next-gen Deere equipment with always-on internet to unlock cutting-edge capabilities.

The lack of rural broadband access has long hampered the rollout of precision agriculture innovations across solitary tracts of cropland and pasture. Deere's autonomous 8R tractor platform, for example, still relies on line-of-sight cellular signals to enable remote monitoring and control through farmers' mobile devices.

SpaceX's satellite network promises to bridge these coverage gaps and help Deere realize the full potential of its technology stack, from real-time data analytics to over-the-air software updates. Improved machine-to-machine coordination will also allow the introduction of advanced automation to augment human productivity.

"Connectivity unlocks vast opportunities that were previously limited for farmers," said Deere's Aaron Wetzel. "It makes the entire operation more efficient, effective and profitable."

The new satellite link-up will debut in 2024 through Deere's existing JDLink telematics system, providing a dedicated high-bandwidth feed for equipment management and decision support. The company expects the solution to be a game-changer not just in the U.S. and Canada, but also key markets like Brazil where internet infrastructure is still playing catch-up.

"We're bringing satellite communications to the farm at scale so all farmers can maximize emerging technologies," said Deere CTO Jahmy Hindman. "The SATCOM solution unlocks the John Deere tech stack so every farmer can fully utilize their current precision ag investments."

With Deere's sights set on autonomous, AI-enabled farming systems of the future, the SpaceX partnership serves to lay the groundwork today. By overcoming Earthly barriers of connectivity, the two leaders in their respective industries aim to cultivate the digital transformation of agriculture worldwide.
