New ‘life-changing’ sensor for even more people with diabetes
Medical device company Dexcom continues its rapid growth and innovation in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with several key announcements that will significantly expand its market and connectivity with automated insulin delivery partners.
Most notably, Dexcom has submitted its newest CGM sensor called Stelo to the FDA for regulatory clearance. Stelo is purpose-built for the approximately 70% of people with type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin. It features a streamlined user experience tailored to non-insulin users' needs, 15-day sensor wear duration, flexible purchasing options, and software customized for lifestyle management versus intensive therapy.
Dexcom expects to launch Stelo commercially this summer pending FDA review. It represents the company’s first major product line for type 2 diabetes and what CEO Kevin Sayer calls “a life-changing device” for better health outcomes. Dexcom continues to see strong momentum with over $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time ever.
The company also announced forthcoming updates to its G7 platform and Dexcom One offering. Integration with additional automated insulin delivery partners Tandem Diabetes and Beta Bionics is now live, enabling their pump users to leverage the benefits of G7’s next-gen accuracy and 10-day wear time. Dexcom’s pipeline further includes direct control from users’ smartwatches and smartphones slated for FDA submission this year.
“Our mission is to empower people to control health and this is the first step along that journey,” said Sayer. “We’ll always be very active in the insulin-using world... We’re never going to abandon that. We’ll continue to advance and enhance our technologies here but we just think glucose can be such a vital sign for other people wanting to control their health.”
With Stelo’s imminent launch and constantly evolving G7 ecosystem, Dexcom is poised to make CGM-based glucose monitoring the standard of care for all individuals with diabetes. Sayer maintains the company’s north star is simple - “you’ve got to be the best.”
