Rainbow Robotics unveils innovative RB-Y1 bimanual mobile manipulator

In a groundbreaking development in the field of robotics, Rainbow Robotics, a leading South Korean robotics company, has announced the release of detailed specifications for its highly anticipated RB-Y1 mobile robot. This unveiling comes on the heels of a significant milestone for the company – the signing of a memorandum of understanding with industry giants Schaeffler Group and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) to co-develop the RB-Y1 and other mobile manipulators in Korea.

The Rise of Mobile Manipulators and Humanoids The past year has witnessed a remarkable surge in the development of humanoid robots, with many companies unveiling bipedal robots designed to walk on two legs. Concurrently, the robotics industry has seen a proliferation of mobile manipulators – autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) equipped with a single arm manipulator on board the vehicle.

Introducing the RB-Y1: A Bimanual Manipulator Rainbow Robotics' RB-Y1 represents a unique fusion of these two rapidly evolving technologies. Dubbed a "bimanual manipulator" by the company, the RB-Y1 combines a wheeled robot base with a humanoid double-arm robot mounted on top. This innovative configuration allows the robot to maneuver through its environment with agility, positioning its arms precisely for manipulation tasks.

Unparalleled Dexterity and Versatility To perform a wide range of complex tasks, the RB-Y1's dual arms boast an impressive seven degrees of freedom each, complemented by a six-axis torso capable of vertical movement exceeding 50 cm (19.7 in.). This remarkable kinematic configuration enables the robot to undertake tasks at various heights, showcasing its versatility and adaptability in diverse industrial settings.

High-Speed Maneuverability and Stability One of the standout features of the RB-Y1 is its remarkable mobility and agility. With a maximum driving speed of 2,500 mm/s (5.6 mph), the robot can accelerate rapidly and execute high-speed turns by leaning its body into the curve. To maintain stability during these dynamic maneuvers, the robot's center of gravity is dynamically adjusted by altering the height of its body, preventing toppling and ensuring safe operation.

Compact yet Powerful Despite its compact dimensions of 600 x 690 x 1,400 mm (23.6 x 27.2 x 55.1 in.) and a weight of 131 kg (288.8 lb.), the RB-Y1 packs a punch with its dual manipulators, each capable of lifting 3 kg (6.61 lb.). This balance of size and strength positions the robot as a versatile solution for various industrial applications.

Paving the Way for Autonomous Intelligence While the current demonstrations of the RB-Y1 showcase its capabilities through teleoperation, Rainbow Robotics has set its sights on the future – the development of fully autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) to power the robot's operations. With a dedicated focus on research, development, training, and simulation, the company aims to overcome the limitations of existing industrial robots and usher in a new era of intelligent, self-directed mobile manipulators.

"These days, when Generative AI such as ChatGPT and Figure is a hot topic in the robot industry, we have developed a bimanual mobile manipulator in line with the AI era," stated a company spokesperson. "We hope that the platform will overcome the limitations of existing industrial robots and be used in many industrial sites."

As the robotics industry continues its rapid evolution, Rainbow Robotics' RB-Y1 stands as a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and its vision for the future of intelligent, autonomous mobile manipulation.
