Franka Emika files for insolvency

Cobot arm maker Franka Emika files for insolvency.

German collaborative robot developer Franca Emika has filed for insolvency due to irreconcilable shareholder differences. Preliminary insolvency administrator Dr. Matthias Hofmann is securing employee wages and seeking investors.

According to Franca Emika, recent negotiations with investors failed amid shareholder disagreements. Hofmann has taken over these talks while engaging new potential investors.

Currently, Hofmann's team is conducting an in-depth company analysis. Franca Emika management has informed over 100 employees, customers, partners and other stakeholders about the situation. Efforts to expand the investor search are underway.

Hints of trouble appeared in early 2020 when integrator Voith Robotics stopped selling Franca's Panda arm in favor of Universal Robots, citing high complexity and costs. Franca's 3 kg payload was also seen as too light compared to the more popular 5 kg and 10 kg capacities.

However, both Hofmann and Franca Emika seem optimistic about future investment prospects. Franca Managing Director Dr. Patrick Pfaff said order books are full, and Dr. Hofmann's support will enable excellent customer service.

Pfaff added that over half of orders now come from industry, research institutes, and small/medium enterprises looking to automate amid labor shortages. He believes a new investor could quickly double revenue and reach positive cash flow.

Franca Emika is best known for its research-focused Panda arm and newest Research 3 platform with low-level programming. But it also provides industrial automation solutions.

While the insolvency filing represents a difficult juncture, Franca Emika retains operational capabilities and strong market demand. With an infusion of new investment capital, its promising technology could still thrive. The company's advanced collaborative robots demonstrate German innovation even amid economic roadblocks.
