BeachBot Cleans Beaches

TechTics' BeachBot uses AI to collect cigarette butts on The Hague beach.

In a move towards environmental conservation, the BeachBot, developed by the TechTics team in the Netherlands, has embarked on its mission to clean up The Hague beach by collecting cigarette butts.

Equipped with artificial intelligence and two cameras, BeachBot scans the beach for litter, particularly focusing on cigarette butts. Utilizing AI algorithms, BeachBot analyzes images sent by users through the Microsoft Trove app. TechTics incentivizes users by offering 25 cents for each photo, with a target of 2,000 shots. Currently, approximately 200 photos have been submitted.

Developer Edwin Bose emphasizes the detrimental effects of discarded cigarette filters, which release toxic chemicals harmful to aquatic organisms. These chemicals, along with microplastics, pose a significant threat to marine life, gradually poisoning sea turtles, birds, fish, and other creatures along coastlines. The slow decomposition of cigarette filters exacerbates this environmental hazard, highlighting the urgency of BeachBot's cleanup efforts.

BeachBot operates for up to two hours before requiring a recharge. To enhance its sustainability, the company plans to integrate solar panels into the robot's design, extending its operational capacity and versatility for addressing various types of beach litter.

As BeachBot continues its vital role in beach cleanup efforts, TechTics demonstrates a commitment to leveraging technology for environmental stewardship, paving the way for a cleaner and healthier coastline for both humans and wildlife alike.
