Sovato Health Inc. achieves milestone in remote robotic surgery

Sovato Health Inc. has successfully conducted a series of remote robotic-assisted surgeries, marking a significant advancement in telemedicine. The procedures, which included nephrectomy, hysterectomy, colectomy, and cholecystectomy, were performed on pigs across a distance of about 500 miles between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska.

Seven surgeons from four specialties utilized Sovato's remote surgery platform, which integrates with Virtual Incision's MIRA Surgical System. Dr. Francesco Bianco from the University of Illinois, Chicago, reported that the experience was "seamless" with "no detectable delay," comparing it favorably to in-person surgeries.

Sovato, co-founded by Cynthia Perazzo and robotics pioneer Yulun Wang, aims to expand access to high-quality surgical care globally. Their platform offers low-latency connectivity, integrated communications, and full situational awareness for surgeons operating remotely.

This development could potentially address surgical care needs for over half the world's population, including 83 million Americans who currently travel for routine procedures. While promising, it's important to note that Sovato's platform has not yet been evaluated by the FDA and is not currently available for sale in the U.S.

As remote surgery technology continues to evolve, it may reshape the future of healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved areas.
