Vast and SpaceX team up to bring high-speed internet to space

In a groundbreaking move, commercial space company Vast has announced a partnership with SpaceX to equip its upcoming Haven-1 space station with cutting-edge laser communication devices, providing future astronauts with high-speed internet access in orbit.

The agreement, signed on April 9th, marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of reliable and efficient connectivity for space-based operations. Vast will leverage SpaceX's recently unveiled "plug and plaser" service, which offers laser communication devices designed to interface with the company's rapidly growing Starlink satellite constellation.



"Connectivity is pivotal for modern space endeavors, enabling real-time data transfer, seamless communication, and enhanced operational efficiency," said representative of Vast. "By collaborating with SpaceX and integrating their innovative laser technology, we're paving the way for a future where astronauts can work, communicate, and explore the cosmos without the limitations of traditional communication systems."

Haven-1, Vast's inaugural space station module, is slated for launch in August 2025 aboard SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9 rocket. The station's aluminum structure is already under construction, with future plans to expand into a more extensive orbital outpost. Vast's long-term goal is to propose Haven as a contender for NASA's Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program, which currently supports the development of Orbital Reef and Starlab space stations.

SpaceX's Starlink network, comprising over 6,000 satellites equipped with laser inter-satellite links, has revolutionized global internet access. Each laser line boasts an impressive data transmission rate of up to 100 Gbps, enabling seamless communication without the need for direct ground station links, ultimately reducing latency.

The effectiveness of Starlink's laser communications will be further demonstrated during the upcoming Polaris Dawn mission, scheduled for liftoff later this summer. While SpaceX has yet to provide specific details, one of the mission's objectives is to verify Starlink communications capabilities in space.

With the "plug and plaser" service, SpaceX is poised to become the first company capable of providing high-performance communication services for space-based operations, capitalizing on the vast Starlink constellation. As commercial space endeavors continue to expand, the demand for reliable internet connectivity will surge, particularly for data-intensive applications such as Earth observation and remote sensing.

The collaboration between Vast and SpaceX underscores the growing importance of public-private partnerships in advancing space exploration and technology.
