Zimmer Biomet expands robotics portfolio through strategic partnership with THINK Surgical

In a move set to reshape the landscape of orthopedic surgery, Zimmer Biomet, a global leader in musculoskeletal healthcare, has announced a groundbreaking limited distribution agreement with THINK Surgical. This strategic partnership aims to integrate Zimmer Biomet's cutting-edge technology with THINK Surgical's innovative TMINI Miniature Robotic System, promising a new era of precision and efficiency in total knee arthroplasty procedures.

The collaboration will result in an exclusive offering that complements Zimmer Biomet's flagship ROSA surgical robotics portfolio. The TMINI system, recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2023, is designed as a handheld robotic option that enables accurate implant placement based on a predetermined CT-based, 3D surgical plan. This integration addresses the growing demand among surgeons for more ergonomic, wireless, and handheld robotic solutions in orthopedic surgeries.

Dr. Nitin Goyal, Chief Science, Technology, and Innovation Officer at Zimmer Biomet, emphasized the significance of this partnership: "TMINI addresses surgeon demand for an ergonomic, wireless, handheld robotic system and now, in addition to ROSA, underscores our dedication to empowering surgeons with more choices to make the right decision for each patient." He further added, "Our strategic partnership with THINK Surgical allows us to explore the value of a handheld platform to accelerate adoption of robotics in orthopedic surgery."

The TMINI system's innovative design automatically compensates for a surgeon's hand movement, allowing for precise location of bone pins along predefined planes. This technology is particularly well-suited for knee procedures performed in ambulatory surgery centers and other outpatient settings, potentially revolutionizing the approach to orthopedic surgeries in these environments.

Zimmer Biomet anticipates introducing the customized TMINI System to select markets in the U.S. in the second half of 2024. This timeline allows for thorough integration and testing, ensuring that the combined technologies meet the high standards expected in orthopedic care.

While this new partnership expands Zimmer Biomet's robotic offerings, the company remains committed to its core ROSA Robotics portfolio. Earlier this year, Zimmer Biomet expanded this portfolio with the introduction of ROSA Shoulder, a robotic surgery system specifically designed for shoulder replacement procedures. The ROSA platform, which includes applications for total knee, partial knee, hip, and shoulder replacement, continues to be the centerpiece of Zimmer Biomet's robotics strategy.

The ROSA Robotics portfolio exemplifies Zimmer Biomet's commitment to providing real-time insights to optimize surgical outcomes and revolutionize the standard of care in orthopedic surgery. Additionally, the company offers ROSA ONE, a versatile robotic platform that assists surgeons in planning and performing minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures.

This latest partnership with THINK Surgical and the ongoing development of the ROSA portfolio underscore Zimmer Biomet's dedication to innovation in the field of orthopedic surgery. With over 90 years of experience, Zimmer Biomet has established itself as a leader in integrated digital and robotic technologies that leverage data analytics and artificial intelligence. The company's global reach, with operations in over 25 countries and sales in more than 100 countries, positions it uniquely to drive the adoption of advanced surgical robotics worldwide.

As the field of orthopedic surgery continues to evolve, partnerships like the one between Zimmer Biomet and THINK Surgical are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the future of patient care. By combining their expertise and technologies, these companies are not only addressing the current needs of surgeons and patients but also paving the way for more advanced, efficient, and patient-friendly surgical solutions in the years to come.

The integration of handheld robotic systems like TMINI with established platforms like ROSA represents a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to make orthopedic surgeries less invasive, more precise, and more accessible across various healthcare settings. As Zimmer Biomet continues to expand its robotics offerings and refine its existing technologies, the benefits for patients, surgeons, and healthcare providers are expected to be substantial, potentially leading to improved outcomes, faster recovery times, and increased access to advanced orthopedic care.
