Luminar's 3D Maps
Luminar, a trailblazing automotive technology firm, is broadening its software portfolio, unveiling high-definition 3D maps that update automatically and are crafted on production vehicles integrated with Luminar's software and hardware.
Drawing upon technology obtained through the acquisition of Civil Maps in the second quarter of 2022, Luminar showcases its latest 3D mapping platform at CES, with Luminar-equipped vehicles navigating the streets of Las Vegas.
With its inaugural mapping contract secured, Luminar remains tight-lipped about the client's identity. Leveraging Luminar's data, the undisclosed partner aims to enhance its AI engine and refine Luminar's perception software, marking a significant step forward in autonomous vehicle development.
Among Luminar's suite of offerings is Sentinal, a software package tailored for consumer vehicles, integrating the company's hardware and software to deliver proactive lidar-based security and highway automation functionalities.
Debuting at CES this year are two vehicle models featuring Luminar software. The Volvo Ex90, an all-electric SUV equipped with Luminar's software and hardware as standard, makes its U.S. debut, showcasing the integrated Luminar iris lidar nestled into the car's roofline. Additionally, the Rising Auto R7 from SAIC, which commenced production in China last October, harnesses Luminar technology, reaffirming Luminar's foothold in the Chinese automotive market.
Austin Russell, Founder and CEO of Luminar, reflects on the pivotal year of 2022, marking the company's transition from R&D to production vehicles. "Our strategic focus on consumer car production and driver enhancement, rather than replacement, is yielding significant results," Russell asserts. "I anticipate Luminar to make waves in 2023 as the automotive industry continues to align with our visionary roadmap."
