"Our detection models were developed by gathering and annotating a vast number of images," explains David Olivero, senior mechanical engineer at FarmWise. "This allows our system to make precise decisions on blade openings and adjustments, ensuring the highest quality weed removal without damaging the crops."

Unlike corn farming in the Midwest, which has seen significant automation, vegetable farming in California has remained largely labor-intensive due to its complexity. Crops vary widely, as do bed spacings, row spacings, and soil morphologies.
To meet these challenges, FarmWise partnered with PBC Linear to develop a customized solution. The implementation includes up to 18 UGA Low Profile Uni-Guide slides with custom-positioned hand brakes, allowing for fine adjustments in the system's height. This flexibility enables the Vulcan to cater to various farm configurations and terrains.
"We appreciated PBC Linear's customization platform," Olivero notes. "Their ability to create a slide with a specific mount offset tailored to our unique requirements was crucial. The low-profile design also helped reduce the cantilever length of the weeder module, mitigating the risk of transport shock during field-to-field movement."
The Vulcan system offers significant economic benefits to farmers. By precisely removing weeds without damaging crops, it can save farmers up to $250 per acre. This level of efficiency not only maximizes yield potential but also minimizes the need for expensive manual labor and reduces reliance on herbicides.
The system's user interface, mounted in the cab of the equipment, allows operators to fine-tune the Vulcan's performance based on specific crop and field conditions. Farmers can adjust precision, blade widths, and other parameters to achieve optimal results. This balance between automation and user control is a key feature of the Vulcan system, acknowledging the invaluable expertise of farmers in understanding their crops and soil conditions.
"While our goal is to maximize automation, we recognize the farmers' expertise," Olivero emphasizes. "We wanted to empower farmers by allowing them to adjust blade depth according to their preference for deeper, more effective weeding or shallower weeding to protect crop roots."
As concerns about herbicide use grow and labor shortages persist, the Vulcan system offers a sustainable and efficient alternative for weed control. Its precision not only reduces the environmental impact of farming but also addresses the increasing difficulty in sourcing herbicides and the rising costs of manual labor.
