Scythe Robotics supercharges production to meet soaring demand

In the suburbs of Boulder County, Colorado, an automation revolution is taking root. Scythe Robotics, a pioneer in autonomous commercial lawnmowers, just opened the doors on a massive new 28,000 square foot headquarters and manufacturing facility to ramp up production of its flagship M.52 robot mower.

The expansion, more than double the size of Scythe's original space, is a direct response to overwhelming demand for its all-electric, self-driving landscaping solution. With a waitlist reportedly thousands of units long, the company plans to deploy over 100 mowers in just the next few months alone.

"Our state-of-the-art robotics facility accelerates our ability to deliver these game-changing machines to customers for the upcoming mowing season," said Jack Morrison, Scythe's co-founder and CEO. "We're incredibly proud that our growth is creating hundreds of meaningful jobs right here in Colorado's cleantech sector."

Inside the New Autonomous Mower Factory

Scythe's new Longmont facility was meticulously designed around lean manufacturing principles to optimize production workflow for the sophisticated M.52 robots. A unidirectional assembly line allows technicians to visually track a mower's progress and rapidly identify and remediate errors before final delivery.

Raised platforms, agile cranes, and dedicated workstations minimize wasted effort for workers assembling the complex machines. Rigorous quality control and testing procedures ensure each autonomous mower meets stringent standards for safety and reliability upon delivery.

"Our optimized manufacturing process guarantees customers receive machines consistently delivering superior outcomes," said Kip Atkinson, Scythe's senior manufacturing engineer. “We're laser-focused on quality at every step.”

The state-of-the-art facility signals Scythe's emergence as a major force in the burgeoning commercial robotics industry. By year's end, the company expects to ramp production up to 8 units per week, with even higher volumes projected when the next generation M.52 debuts in late 2024.

An Automation Hub Blooming in Colorado

For Scythe, located just north of Denver, the booming "Silicon Mountain" region provides the perfect soil to cultivate its robotics ambitions. With a diverse talent pool, proximity to top research universities, and an embedded culture of outdoor innovation, the Colorado front range is rapidly becoming an automation epicenter.

"Colorado is leading the industries of tomorrow, and we're thrilled Scythe is expanding here to pioneer robotics and create nearly 400 high-quality jobs," said Governor Jared Polis. The state ranks 5th nationally as a cleantech hub.

Scythe's new digs garnered special recognition from state and local officials committed to supporting the next wave of technology development. As demand for robotic landscaping solutions takes root nationwide, Scythe is positioning itself at the leading edge - with manufacturing might to match.

The company will showcase its scaling efforts at next month's Robotics Summit & Expo in Boston. Lead Test Engineer Nathaniel Czarnecki will reveal Scythe's framework for "Building a Scalable Testing Program to Drive Robot Reliability" as the company transitions to mass production.

From medicine to mining, countless sectors are looking to autonomous robots to boost efficiency and safety. In the commercial landscaping realm, Scythe is proving you can cultivate transformative technologies while prioritizing sustainable practices and regional job growth. As this new Colorado robotics hub blossoms, the company is planting itself as an emerging anchor tenant.
